Asia Cup: Asia Cup’s last edition was played in the One Day International format in 2023. India had won that edition when they had played all the fifty overs games in the island nation of Sri Lanka. Pakistan was also the co-host of that event last year. But the Men in Blue refused to play games in the Men in Green nation.
India under Rohit Sharma had clinched their eighth title of the Asia Cup in 2023. Now the next edition of this ACC event will be played in the shortest format and India has the hosting rights of that event in 2025 owing to the T20 World Cup in 2026, where Sri Lanka and India will jointly host that ICC mega event of the shortest format.
Bangladesh will host the 2026 edition of the Asia Cup, which will be played in the One Day International format and that event will also be played like a dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup in 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. In this segment today, let us -look at the host countries who have won the Asia Cup –
1. Sri Lanka –
The team of the Lankan Tigers have won six Asia Cup tiles till now and they have also reached the finals of this tournament for the most number of times. India was the first Asian team to win the Asia Cup trophy when the tournament was played for the first ever time in the United Arab Emirates in 1984.
But Sri Lanka was the first host country to win this event in 1986. They also have a record of winning the Asia Cup titles for the most number of times as the host country of this tournament. Apart from winning the title in 1986, Sri Lanka has also won the titles of the Asia Cup events in the 1997 and 2004 editions as the host country of this Asian tournament.
2. India –
Team India has not hosted the Asua Cup quite a lot as other countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates have done it till now. The Men in Blue nation has hosted the Asia Cup tournament just once as of now in such a long history of this tournament.
The last and only time when Team India was the host of the Asia Cup was in 1991 and since then the Men in Blue side have not hosted a single event of this Asian competition. As mentioned above, this Asian tournament has been hosted in other countries of Asia for the majority of the time. However, India had won that edition of the Asia Cup when they were the host of the 1991 season, when that edition was played in the ODI format.
