This will be India’s first metro train that will run with only three coaches. Currently, metro trains in Indian cities run with four, six or eight coaches.

8 Km Corridor Part of DMRC Phase 4

DMRC officials said on Sunday that this is part of the fourth phase of the Delhi Metro project. This corridor will stretch for 8 km, making it the second shortest line in the DMRC network.

The aim of this line is to enhance connectivity to the inner areas of the city and provide seamless interchange with existing corridors. These 3 coach trains are specially designed for short distance urban travel.

Delhi Metro: Focus on Short-Distance Travel and Improved Connectivity

DMRC stated that the decision was taken based on a realistic assessment of passenger needs. Long-distance trains with more coaches are required on routes with higher passenger traffic.

However, the Lajpat Nagar-Saket section primarily serves short-distance commuters who require less frequent metro service. The DMRC said the projected peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of the corridor will allow smooth travel without the need for more capacity trains.

Metro to Operate Between Eight Stations

The three-coach system aims to ensure economic sustainability while maintaining high urban standards. Each coach can accommodate around 300 passengers seated and standing, making the total capacity of the three-coach train around 900 passengers per trip.

According to the statement, the corridor will have eight stations strategically located between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block, aimed at improving accessibility to key residential and commercial areas.

PM Modi Laid Foundation in 2024, Metro Line to Open by 2028

The station’s platform is being designed with a length of 74 metres, which is conducive to operating three-coach trains. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in March 2024. Now the construction work has started and the corridor is expected to be completed by 2028,” a DMRC official said.
