The tariff war between China and the US is rapidly escalating. On Tuesday, the US imposed a massive 104% tariff on Chinese goods. In response, China has announced an 84% tariff on US products, which will come into effect from Thursday, April 10.
This sharp escalation has escalated tensions between Trump and China to a great extent. The ongoing tariff war, which started with a wider trade conflict, is now expected to have a global impact.
Trade Tensions Soar
Until last month, the US was imposing a 10% tariff on China. Then, on April 2, Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on 60 countries, including an additional 34% tariff on China – taking the total tariff on Chinese goods to 44%.
Soon after this announcement, the White House said it would impose an additional 10% non-reciprocal tariff globally, taking China’s total tariff burden to 54%.
In retaliation, China announced a 34% tariff on US products. Less than 48 hours later, Trump retaliated by raising tariffs on Chinese goods by 50%, bringing the total US tariffs on China to 104%, effective Wednesday, April 9.
During a press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called China’s retaliation a mistake. She said, “When America is challenged, the response is strong and firm.” Leavitt said, “China’s retaliation was a mistake. When America is attacked, it retaliates even more forcefully.”
Tariff War: China Strikes Back with 84% Tariff
After Trump imposed 34% tariffs on China on April 2, the total tariff rate on Chinese imports to the US rose to 54%. With an additional 50% increase soon after, the total US tariff on Chinese goods rose to 104%.
In response, China has now announced tariffs of 84% on US imports.
