ALH Dhruv: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has granted flight clearance for the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv fleet operated by the Indian Army and Air Force. The clearance of ALH Dhruv helicopters after being grounded for four months is a significant milestone for India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
After the accident of January 5, 2025, a thorough investigation and improvement process has ensured enhanced safety and reliability of the helicopters.
The Army and Air Force versions of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have been cleared for operations after a four-month suspension. The decision was based on the recommendations of a Defect Investigation (DI) Committee, which reviewed technical issues in the helicopters.
Grounding of ALH Dhruv

On January 5, 2025, an ALH Dhruv helicopter of the Indian Coast Guard crashed, leading to all Dhruv helicopters being grounded. The incident raised concerns over the technical reliability of the helicopter, leading the Defence Ministry to set up a Defect Investigation Committee. The committee was tasked with identifying the cause of the accident and ensuring the safety of the helicopter fleet.
The operations of the Dhruv helicopters of the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard were completely stopped in the last four months. During this time HAL and the armed forces jointly analyzed the technical issues and implemented corrective measures. In a clarification issued on April 11, 2025, HAL said that the investigation process is in its final stages and plans are being made to resume operations soon.
Approval and Operational Plan
Based on the recommendations of the defect investigation committee, the Army and the Air Force have been allowed to resume operations of ALH Dhruv helicopters. A time-bound plan has been agreed upon between the armed forces and HAL, under which the helicopters will be brought back into service in a phased manner. The plan includes the following key points…
- Technical Improvements
The committee had identified certain design and maintenance-related issues in the helicopters, which have since been addressed by HAL. These included enhancements to the rotor system, engine performance, and avionics.
- Pilot Training
Before resuming full operations, pilots will undergo training on new safety protocols and upgraded systems.
- Phased Operations
Initially, the helicopters will be deployed for limited missions. Regular monitoring will be conducted before transitioning to full-scale operations.
- Coast Guard Status
No final decision has been made regarding the Coast Guard’s Dhruv helicopters, as the inspection and rectification process is still ongoing.
