Indian Medical Legacy : In a monumental moment bridging ancient eastern wisdom and modern western medicine, a 90-kilogram bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta has been officially unveiled at the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) in Scotland.

Widely revered across India and the global medical community as the “Father of Surgery,” Sushruta’s installation in the college’s famed Playfair Auditorium marks a landmark celebration of India’s deep-rooted medical heritage.

The event serves as a powerful testament to the long-standing, historical ties between India and Scotland in the fields of healthcare and surgical education.

Global Recognition for the Pioneer of Plastic Surgery

Indian Medical Legacy : The unveiling ceremony brought together an influential gathering of medical professionals, leading academics, and international dignitaries from both India and the United Kingdom.

The installation was spearheaded by the Consulate General of India in Scotland, alongside Professor Chandra Cheruvu, a highly accomplished, UK-based laparoscopic and upper gastro-intestinal surgeon of Indian origin.

“The ceremony celebrated India’s ancient medical heritage, the historical India-Scotland links in medicine and surgery, and the important role played by the Royal College in advancing surgical education worldwide,” stated the Indian Consulate.

To cement the historical validity of this occasion, Professor Cheruvu also authored and released a comprehensive, evidence-based compendium titled, ‘Maharshi Sushruta: A Compendium – Father of Surgery.’ By formally accepting both the book and the bronze sculpture into its permanent heritage collection, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has reinforced Sushruta’s position in global medical history as the world’s very first surgeon.

Who Was Maharishi Sushruta?

Indian Medical Legacy : Believed to have lived around 600 BCE in the ancient, sacred city of Varanasi, Maharishi Sushruta was a visionary genius who revolutionized healthcare millennia before the advent of modern science.

He is best known for authoring the Sushruta Samhita, an foundational Sanskrit text that laid out the blueprint for surgical techniques, complex medical procedures, and bio-ethics. Remarkably, his teachings outlined ethical training standards for doctors centuries before the Hippocratic Oath was formalized.

The First Plastic Surgeon: Long before modern reconstructive surgery existed, Sushruta pioneered rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction) by using precise flaps of skin from the forehead.

Master of Innovation: Over 2,600 years ago, he performed more than 300 types of surgeries.

Inspired by Nature: He invented 124 distinct surgical instruments, many of which were ingeniously modeled after the shapes of animals, birds, and natural elements.

Broad Expertise: His writings systematized a vast array of disciplines, including orthopedics, urology, gynecology, and toxicology.

Craftsmanship and Philanthropy Bridging Continents

The stunning 90-kg bronze statue was entirely funded and donated by the Cheruvu Family Foundation, an organization rooted in a 600-year family lineage of traditional Ayurvedic and modern healing practices.

The physical masterpiece itself was meticulously crafted by a master sculptor in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, before making its journey to the United Kingdom.

In tandem with the unveiling, the family established the Cheruvu Professional Development Grants. Administered by the RCSEd, these grants will fund two permanent annual traveling surgical scholarships, perfectly blending a respect for ancestral roots with the forward-looking advancement of global surgical training.

A Meeting of Giants at the World’s Oldest Surgical Institution

The venue for the installation adds immense weight to the honor. Founded in 1505 and receiving its royal charter from King James IV in 1506, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is the world’s oldest and largest surgical institution, boasting a network of over 33,000 members spanning 140 countries.

The high-profile unveiling was attended by a stellar lineup of dignitaries, including:

Siddharth Malik, India’s Consul General to Scotland

Professor Clare McNaught, Current President of the Royal College

Professor Rowan Parks, Former President of the Royal College

Professor Marc Halpern, Founder of the California College of Ayurveda

By giving Sage Sushruta a permanent home inside the heart of modern Western surgery, this historic event successfully bridges a 2,600-year-old legacy with 21st-century medicine, ensuring true medical history is preserved for generations to come.
