Damascus blast : A series of explosive devices detonated in the heart of the Syrian capital on Tuesday morning, striking near the luxury Four Seasons Hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron and his diplomatic delegation are staying.

Despite the immediate proximity of the blasts, the French presidential office has confirmed that President Macron remains completely unharmed. The explosions occurred while Macron was away from the hotel, attending a high-profile diplomatic meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the People’s Palace.

Smoke and Panic in the Capital

Damascus blast : According to security sources and Reuters witnesses on the ground, at least two distinct explosions echoed through Damascus on Tuesday morning. One blast reportedly occurred on a peripheral road, while another detonated inside the city center, just steps away from the hotel hosting the French delegation.

Thick plumes of dark smoke were seen rising into the sky over Damascus immediately after the detonations. Footages widely circulated on social media showed a vehicle on fire and blood stains on the street near the blast site.

Syrian security forces acted instantly, deploying heavily armed patrols to the area. Authorities have completely sealed off all major roads leading to the hotel, and security measures across the capital have been raised to the highest level of alert.

Macron Unfazed, Diplomatic Talks Continue

Damascus blast : Despite the security breach, French officials stated that the incident has not derailed the president’s agenda. Syrian state television confirmed that Macron was already at the presidential palace when the attack occurred.

The French leader has decided to move forward with his scheduled itineraries, emphasizing that the focus remains on the critical diplomatic transition in the region.

“The President is safe, and his historic visit to Syria is continuing exactly as planned,” a spokesperson from the French delegation confirmed.

Why This Visit Matters: A Fragile New Syria

This landmark trip marks the first time a major Western European head of state has visited Damascus since the monumental collapse and ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Macron’s two-day visit was intentionally designed to:

Strengthen New Ties: Build direct diplomatic communication with the new Syrian leadership under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Support Reconstruction: Discuss European assistance for rebuilding the war-torn nation.

Assess Security: Evaluate regional stability and economic cooperation first-hand.

However, Tuesday’s explosions have brutally highlighted the incredibly volatile and fragile security situation that the new government is still struggling to control during this political transition.

A Growing Trend of Urban Terror

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s targeted explosions. However, the attack follows a highly troubling pattern of recent violence in the capital.

Just days prior to this incident, a deadly bomb attack shattered a crowded cafe near the Justice Palace in central Damascus, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20 others.

Security experts fear that insurgent remnants or extremist factions are actively attempting to sabotage the new government’s efforts to showcase global stability to visiting foreign dignitaries.

An official investigation into the hotel blasts is currently underway by Syrian intelligence and local security forces.
