On February 9th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in an address that Dr. Swaminathan’s visionary leadership has not only transformed Indian agriculture but also ensured the nation’s food security and prosperity.
He also expressed his respect for Dr. Swaminathan’s insights and announced the posthumous Bharat Ratna for him, along with PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Honored with the award
Today, President Dr. Draupadi Murmu honored five eminent personalities of India with the Bharat Ratna. Former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Karpoori Thakur, and MS Swaminathan were among those honored.
The ceremony was attended by many dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
PV Narasimha Rao, the 9th Prime Minister of the country, implemented economic reforms that reshaped the nation’s economy. Following his demise, his son PV Prabhakar Rao received the award on his behalf.
Chaudhary Charan Singh,a renowned farmer leader was honored for his exemplary work for the farming community. His grandson, Jayant Chaudhary, accepted the honor.
MS Swaminathan often hailed as the messiah of farmers, formulated the MSP formula for the welfare of farmers. His daughter, Nitya Rao, was conferred with the award.
Karpoori Thakur, who served as the Chief Minister of Bihar for 2 years and also held the position of Education Minister, was posthumously honored with the Bharat Ratna. His son, Ramnath Thakur, accepted the honor.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani, due to his age and health, will be honored at his residence by President Draupadi Murmu.
