Alternative Venues: Dubai and Sri Lanka

The BCCI is exploring the possibility of holding India’s matches in Dubai or Sri Lanka. This move mirrors the arrangement made during the recent Asia Cup, where India played its matches in Sri Lanka while the rest of the tournament took place in Pakistan. The hybrid model is under consideration to ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly without compromising the security and comfort of the Indian team.

Players Reluctant to Travel to Pakistan

Sources indicate that Indian players are not comfortable travelling to Pakistan, necessitating further discussions. Despite the Pakistan cricket team having travelled to India for the ODI World Cup last year, there remains a strong reluctance from the Indian side to reciprocate due to security concerns.

Initial Plans for Lahore

Pakistan had submitted a draft schedule for the Champions Trophy to the ICC, with plans to host the high-profile India-Pakistan match in Lahore on March 1. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had prepared extensively, planning to invest heavily in stadium upgrades and security measures. All of India’s matches were scheduled in Lahore to ensure maximum security.

Preparations in Pakistan

The PCB has already commenced preparations for the Champions Trophy, investing substantial funds to refurbish cricket grounds. Despite the planned investments and preparations, the potential shift of India’s matches to Dubai or Sri Lanka means that Pakistan’s draft schedule might need significant revisions.

Group Stage Composition

India and Pakistan are placed in Group A, alongside New Zealand and Bangladesh. Group B includes Australia, Afghanistan, England, and South Africa. The reallocation of matches may affect the tournament’s dynamics, but the priority remains ensuring a safe and competitive environment for all teams involved.

While the Champions Trophy 2025 was initially set to be a showcase event in Pakistan, the geopolitical and security complexities have prompted a reevaluation of venues for India’s matches. The BCCI and ICC are working together to find a solution that upholds the integrity of the tournament while addressing the concerns of all stakeholders involved.
