Kanwar Yatra 2024: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the government of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh regarding the Kanwar Yatra nameplate controversy. This follows a heated argument in the Supreme Court on Monday, July 22. After this the court stated that shopkeepers do not need to disclose their names or identities, but only the type of food they are serving—whether vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
On July 19, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath made a significant decision ordering nameplates to be affixed on all food and drink shops located along the Kanwar routes in the state. These nameplates were to display the name and identity of the shop owners. This decision was aimed at maintaining the faith of Kanwar pilgrims.
Following this decision, a petition was filed against it in court, and hearings on the nameplate dispute were underway. During the arguments, senior advocate Seeyu Singh, representing the petitioner, argued that Shiv Dhaba is a chain that can be operated by anyone, regardless of their religion—be it Sikh, Muslim, or Christian.
Various arguments were presented during the hearing
Representing the NGO during the proceedings, advocate Seeyu Singh stated that the Uttar Pradesh government does not have any legal authority for this decision. No law grants such powers to the police commissioner. There will be no benefit from ordering such nameplates on roadside tea stalls or cart vendors. The small street vendors will only go through financial crises.
Supreme Court issued notice to three state government
The Supreme Court, after hearing all these arguments, has halted the government order to install nameplates on eateries situated along the Kanwar pilgrimage route. Notices have been sent to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh in response to challenging petitions. The court has asked for their responses, and the hearing date has been set for July 26.
