IND Vs NZ: New Zealand is on the verge of a famous win in India. The visitors have put up a magnificent performance with the ball earlier and with the bat now in the ongoing Test match versus Rohit Sharma and his men at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
After bowling the hosts out for their lowest score of 46 runs at home, New Zealand has put the Indian bowlers on the sword with the bat in hand which has allowed the Kiwis to be in the commanding position like never before in India. New Zealand would be aiming to win this Test match and go 1-0 up in the series.
It was in 1988 that The Kiwis won their last red ball game in India. The Blackcaps won that match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. But as of now, they are yet to win a Test series on Indian soil. Their first-ever win in the Test matches played in the Men in Blue nation came in 1969 at Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur. The Blackcaps won that match by 167 runs and also drew that series to one all under the leadership skills of Graham Dowling.
IND Vs NZ: The Former Coach Of The Indian Cricket Team Was The Last Captain Of New Zealand Who Won A Red Ball Match In India
John Wright was one of the great coaches of Team India. Under Wright, India had reached the 2003 ODI World Cup finals in South Africa. John was the first foreign coach of the Men in Blue, who served the team from 2000 to 2005 and he is still said to be one of the best coaches of the team.
In 1988, John Wright led the New Zealand side in a three match series versus India on their tour. India started the series with a win against The Kiwis at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. But the visiting team of New Zealand made a comeback in the second Test match of that series which was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Wright is still just the second skipper from New Zealand to win a Test match in India.
The visitors, New Zealand batted first and scored 236 runs in the 1st innings. John Bracewell scored the most runs in the 1st innings. His 52 runs and Mark Greatbatch’s 46 runs allowed The Kiwis to reach that total. For India, Ravi Shastri picked up a four-wicket haul, Narendra Hirwani picked up three wickets and Arshad Ayub got one scalp to his name. Despite a 94-run knock from Kris Shrikant, India fell 2 runs short of the New Zealand score. The home side managed to get 234 runs in their 1st innings.
The Blues were restricted to that total mainly because of Sir Richard Hadlee, who picked a six-wicket haul in the 1st innings when the Indian team batted. Then the Kiwis strengthened their position in the second innings and registered their second and last win in India.
The Blackcaps scored 279 runs in their second innings because of Andrew Jones’s 78 runs and Ian Smith’s 54-run knock. They had set a target of 282 runs for India to win the match and also take the series.
With the bowl, it was Arshad Ayub who picked a five-wicket haul and Narendra Hirwani who got four scalps to his name. However, the batters of the Men in Blue failed to chase that score and they were bundled out for just 145 runs in the second innings.
John Bracewell picked up a six wicket haul and Sir Richard Hadlee got a four fer to his name. Arun Lal’s 47 runs and Kapil Dev’s 36 runs were the highest run scorers for India which wasn’t enough as the home side lost the match by 136 runs.
