Devendra Fadnavis Sworn in as Maharashtra CM for the Third Time; Shinde, Ajit Pawar Take Deputy Roles

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Devendra Fadnavis has taken oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This is his third term. Along with him, NCP chief Ajit Pawar and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Ministers, BJP National President JP Nadda and Chief Ministers of several states attended the swearing-in ceremony held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.

BJP Likely to Get 21-22 Departments

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the allocation of cabinet portfolios among the three parties will be finalized. BJP is expected to receive 21 to 22 departments, while Shiv Sena has demanded 16, though it is likely to settle for 12. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar is expected to be assigned 9 to 10 departments.

Fadnavis First Became CM in 2014

Devendra Fadnavis became the Chief Minister for the first time in 2014. He led the government for five years and in 2019, BJP emerged as the single largest party but could not form the government.

After two and a half years, BJP formed an NDA government led by Eknath Shinde. In this government, Devendra Fadnavis assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister.

We Will Run the Government Together: Fadnavis

In the BJP Legislature Party meeting on Wednesday morning, Devendra Fadnavis was unanimously chosen as the Chief Ministerial candidate. After this, a meeting of Mahayuti leaders was held and a letter of support was prepared for Fadnavis.

Subsequently, Eknath Shinde, Ajit Pawar and Fadnavis went to Raj Bhavan and presented their claim to form the government before Governor CP Radhakrishnan. After this, the three leaders held a joint press conference.

Eknath Shinde said, “In 2022, at this very place, Fadnavis proposed my name for the post of Chief Minister and today I am proposing his name here.”

Fadnavis said, “The post of Chief Minister is a technical arrangement. The three of us will run the government together.”
