Elections in Bangladesh may take place at the end of next year or in early 2026. However, the question now is whether Sheikh Hasina can contest the elections while staying in India, or if there will be a ban on her participation.
When Will the Elections Be Held in Bangladesh?
Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, has made an important statement about the upcoming elections. He said on state television that the dates for the elections could be set in late 2025 or the first half of 2026.
The interim government led by Yunus has taken a number of initiatives aimed at reforming various sectors of the country, from the Election Commission to financial institutions.
However, major political parties, including the BNP led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, are insisting on holding elections soon.
All Political Parties Await Election Dates
It is important to note that despite considerable criticism and protests within the country, the Yunus government is yet to announce the election dates.
According to a report by the Dhaka Tribune, Yunus elaborated on his decision behind delaying the announcement. He said that he has repeatedly urged all parties to hold elections after completing all the necessary major reforms.
Regarding the parliamentary elections, Yunus mentioned that if political consensus leads to holding elections with minor reforms and error-free preparation of the voter list, elections could be possible by the end of 2025.
Will Sheikh Hasina Contest the Elections?
It is noteworthy that after the coup in Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India for safety. Now, questions are being raised about whether her party will contest the elections, or if she can contest while staying in India.
According to reports, if Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, is not banned in Bangladesh, she can contest the elections. However, it is uncertain whether she will be able to run as a candidate from her party.
The interim government holds her responsible for the student protests and deaths in Bangladesh.
In such a scenario, if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, she could face legal action and possibly a prison sentence.
