Let us tell you that 2024 has set a heat record. Breaking the record of 2016, 2024 has become the hottest year since 1901. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, 2024 has now been officially declared the hottest year in India since records began in 1901.

Hottest Year: 2024 Breaks 2016 Record

In a virtual press briefing, IMD Director General Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra said the annual average land surface air temperature in 2024 was 0.65 degrees Celsius above the long-term average for the period 1991-2020.

This surpassed the previous record set in 2016 when the average temperature was 0.54 degrees Celsius above normal.

He further stated, “IMD data reflects a broader trend of rising temperatures and erratic weather patterns in India. In 2024, the country experienced prolonged heatwaves along with irregular rainfall.”

The Need for Climate Action

During the press briefing, IMD Director General Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra emphasized the urgent need for climate action. He highlighted the importance of immediate and coordinated efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. IMD emphasized the need to tackle this global challenge to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.
