Consuming honey has many health benefits and it is known for its antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. According to a research report by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, honey is rich in proteins, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes and essential minerals.
In Ayurveda, pure honey is considered highly beneficial. It is also helpful in relieving cold, cough and seasonal flu. However, due to increasing adulteration in the market, it is necessary to identify pure honey to ensure its health benefits. Here is how you can differentiate between pure and fake honey.

Identify Honey Purity with These Simple Tests
- Thumb Test
To check if your honey is pure or adulterated, put a small amount of honey on your thumb. If it spreads like other liquids, it is probably not pure honey. Real honey is thick and does not drip easily.
- Water Test
You can also check the authenticity of honey using water. Take a glass of water and add a teaspoon of honey to it. If the honey dissolves in the water, it is probably adulterated. Pure honey is thick and settles at the bottom of the glass.
- Vinegar Test
Another way to test honey is vinegar. Add a few drops of honey to vinegar water. If the mixture starts foaming, then your honey is impure.
