The Election Commission has taken an important decision to curb fake voting and fake voter IDs. The Commission has decided to link voter ID cards to Aadhaar cards. Now it will be mandatory for citizens across the country to link their voter ID cards to Aadhaar to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Major Decision Taken in a Meeting with Officials
According to reports, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar held a meeting with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi at Nirvachan Sadan.
The meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary, Secretary of Legislative Department, Secretary of Ministry of Electronics and IT, CEO of UIDAI and technical experts of the Election Commission.
Preparations Begin for Aadhaar-Voter ID Integration
According to reports, experts from the Election Commission and UIDAI will soon begin technical consultations on linking Aadhaar with voter ID. After these discussions, the linking process is expected to begin.
Election Commission Issues Official Statement
The Election Commission clarified in an official statement that as per Article 326 of the Constitution, the right to vote is granted only to Indian citizens, while Aadhaar only establishes the identity of the individual.
Therefore, it has been decided that linking of Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) with Aadhaar will be done in accordance with Article 326 of the Constitution, Sections 23(4), 23(5) and 23(6) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and in compliance with the 2023 judgment of the Supreme Court.
The Commission further said that the law allows voluntary linking of voter lists with the Aadhaar database.
