Anuj Thapan, one of the four accused of giving weapons to those who opened fire at Salman Khan’s house, committed suicide on Wednesday in the custody of Mumbai Police. The accused hanged himself with a sheet in the toilet of Mumbai Police Headquarters.
Police received information about the hanging at 11 am. However, the information about the time of suicide of accused Anuj has not been revealed yet. In a very critical condition, he was taken to St. George Hospital and then to CSMT in the morning, where doctors declared him dead.
Thapan Was Arrested From Punjab
Thapan, who was arrested from Punjab on 26 April, along with Chander allegedly handed the shooters — Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal — two country-made pistols and cartridges on 15 March, according to the Mumbai Police.
Anuj was a truck helper and many cases are registered against both the accused in Punjab and Haryana. According to the sources, both were working together with Lawrence Bishnoi for many years.
He stayed with 10 other inmates in the lock-up and was guarded by four-five policemen. What drove Anuj to suicide is under investigation, sources said.
Criminal Investigation Department Will Question
Former Maharashtra senior police officer PK Jain said that any death in a lock-up is reported as a murder case and all the policemen in the station will be questioned by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department). He also said that the police usually ensure that there should not be any object that could be used by a person to die by suicide.
He further said that there have been cases when people have died by suicide with a noose made from pajamas inside lock-ups. A policeman always guards to ensure inmates don’t escape from the lock-up, and also to keep an eye on suicide attempts.
Thapan and Chander are from Fazilka, which is a very close place to Lawrence Bishnoi’s place in Punjab.
