A tragic incident occurred at the international border in Tripura, where a 13-year-old Hindu girl from Bangladesh was shot dead while attempting to cross into India illegally. The girl lost her life during firing by the Border Security Force (BSF).
The incident follows increasing unrest in Bangladesh after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reports suggest that Hindus in Bangladesh have been facing persecution, prompting many to seek refuge in India for safety. Numerous attempts by Bangladeshi citizens to cross the border have been reported in the past, with this case being the latest and most tragic. The young girl, identified as Swarna Das, was attempting to enter India with her mother when the incident occurred.
BSF Hands Over the Body to Bangladesh Authorities
According to the Dhaka Tribune, the BSF handed over Swarna’s body to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday night, nearly 45 hours after the tragic incident. The body was formally identified as that of 13-year-old Swarna Das, who was fatally shot in the alleged BSF firing. The local Kulaura Police Station officer, Binay Shan Roy, confirmed the transfer of the body, stating that it was sent to Bangladesh after completing all legal formalities.
Mother and Daughter’s Attempt to Cross the Border
A flag meeting was arranged between BGB and BSF to address the situation. Swarna Das, daughter of Porendra Das from Kalanigar village in West Juri Union, Bangladesh, had set out with her mother to cross into India. The two reportedly attempted to visit Swarna’s elder brother, who resides in Tripura. Assisted by two brokers, the mother and daughter duo arrived at the Indian border around 9 p.m. on Sunday. However, as they approached the border, BSF personnel opened fire, leading to Swarna’s tragic death on the spot. Her mother, though unharmed, witnessed the ordeal.
This incident has sparked outrage and has led to increased security measures along the India-Bangladesh border.
