Bengal Protest: A lady doctor was raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The whole country is protesting against this matter. Protests are going on in many places. Resident doctors across the country have gone on strike. The protests are increasing with each passing day.
On the night of Wednesday, 14 August, some people attacked the people protesting in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. They beat up many protesting doctors and also vandalized the entire hospital. After this incident, the government has now taken a strict action. A memorandum has been issued by the Union Health Ministry, in which FIR should be filed within 6 hours in case of violence against healthcare workers.
According to the memorandum issued, if any assault or violence takes place with a healthcare worker on duty, then the head of the hospital/institution will be responsible for registering an FIR within 6 hours of the incident. This memorandum has been issued for two reasons. The first reason is the rape-murder case of a lady doctor in Kar Medical College and Hospital and the second reason is the attack on the doctors protesting there by some people on the night of 14 August.
Bengal Protest: What happened in the college on 14 August
On the night of 14 August, a large number of common people and doctors were protesting demanding justice for what happened to the lady doctor. Then a group of more than 50 people entered the hospital in a truck and joined the crowd.
Those people were showing themselves as protesters, but after some time their riotous face came to the fore. These despicable people vandalized the hospital to destroy the evidence and also pelted stones at the policemen present there. Teardrops had to be fired to disperse the crowd.
They had brought stones, bricks and sticks with them with which they vandalised the emergency ward, nursing station, medical and OPD of the hospital. CCTV cameras were broken and the place where the doctors were protesting was also vandalised. There were also reports of several policemen getting injured in the incident and several videos have also surfaced on social media.
Police arrested 19 people
Kolkata Police has arrested several people from social media after identifying them from the group that created a ruckus in the hospital by filing an RG. Police said that 19 people have been taken into custody so far. It has not yet been revealed which organisation these miscreants belonged to. Many people say that they were sent by Mamata Banerjee’s party.
