The Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading rapidly in China, particularly affecting children. DGHS Responds to HMPV Virus Outbreak in China
On Friday (January 3, 2024), Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Atul Goel gave information about the metapneumovirus outbreak in China.
He said, “There is an outbreak of metapneumovirus in China, and it is serious, but we do not think it is a major concern here. Metapneumovirus is a common respiratory virus that causes illnesses like common cold or flu symptoms in some people, especially the elderly and children under one year of age. However, it is not a serious illness that requires much concern. Respiratory virus infections occur during the cold season. Our hospitals and institutions are prepared to deal with it. Beds and oxygen are available. No special medicine is required as there is no specific antiviral drug for this virus.”
No Need for the Country to Worry
The DGHS also clarified that respiratory disease cases tend to increase in India during the winter months, but everything is being closely monitored. According to current data, there haven’t been any significant spikes in cases, and the rise is just the normal increase seen in winter. Nothing serious is happening, so there is no need for the country to be concerned.
HMPV Virus: A New Threat in China with COVID-like Symptoms
According to many reports coming from China, the HMPV virus is spreading rapidly, causing significant issues in hospitals there. Several experts have stated that the symptoms of this virus are similar to those of COVID-19.
