Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland suddenly resigned on Monday. While stepping down, she said that she no longer shares the same view as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the best path forward for Canada.
Freeland was scheduled to present economic recession data to Parliament. However, she announced her resignation just hours before the presentation. The report was widely expected to show that the government has significantly exceeded its planned budget deficit for 2023-24.
Freeland Cites Uncertainty with Trudeau
Freeland wrote a letter to Trudeau, which she shared on Twitter. “For the past several weeks, you and I have been uncertain about Canada’s future,” she said in the letter.
Considered one of Trudeau’s closest allies in the cabinet, Freeland served as both finance minister and deputy prime minister.
What Caused the Rift?
According to Canadian media reports, the confrontation between Freeland and Trudeau stems from government proposals for temporary tax breaks and other spending measures.
In a letter addressed to Trudeau, Freeland wrote, “On Friday, you told me that you no longer wish me to serve as Minister of Finance and offered me another position in Cabinet.”
