The challenges facing the Hindu community in Canada are becoming increasingly visible, as they are regularly targeted by pro-Khalistani groups employing various methods to intimidate them. From gathering personal information and issuing threats on social media to holding protest rallies against them, the pressure on Canadian Hindus is mounting.
Police Demand Payment for Protection from Hindu Community
Recently, a significant development emerged as Canadian police reportedly asked the Hindu community to pay for their own security. Reports indicate that authorities have requested between $35,000 and $70,000 from the community to ensure their protection from pro-Khalistani groups. Hindu organizations have condemned this demand, comparing it to a form of “extortion” and accusing the police of discrimination. The Coalition of Hindus of North America took to social media, questioning why additional fees are required for security despite paying taxes. As tensions grow, several Hindu events have also been canceled under pressure from Khalistani supporters.
Political Backing of Khalistani Elements
The Canadian government, currently led by a minority under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, relies on the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, has been accused of receiving funding from pro-Khalistani organizations. According to a report, slain Khalistani figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar donated large sums to the NDP from 2014 to 2019, with other extremist figures also contributing to the party. Reports suggest that Khalistani extremist groups have deeply infiltrated Canadian politics, escalating the difficulties faced by the Hindu community in the country.
