The murder of Chandan Gupta in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj drew national attention due to its communal implications. On Friday, the special court delivered the long-awaited judgment, sentencing 28 individuals to life imprisonment. Two accused were acquitted earlier due to a lack of evidence.

Names of the Convicts

Chandan Gupta Murder Case: The 28 convicts include two brothers, Wasim Javed and Naseem Javed, along with Jagga alias Mohammad, Zahid Qureshi, Asif Quraily alias Hitler, Akram, Aslam Qureshi, Khillan, Taufiq, Rahat, Salman, Shabab Ali Khan, Asif Jimwala, Bablu, Saqib, Nishu alias Zeeshan, Wasif, Imran, Jafar, Saqir, Shamshad, Khalid Parvez, Faizan, Imram, Mohammad Amir Rafi, Munazir, and Salim. Previously, the court had acquitted Nasruddin and Aseem Qureshi for lack of evidence.

26 Convicts Present in Court During Sentencing

Chandan Gupta Murder Case: Due to the communal violence triggered by the incident, the case garnered significant attention. The special judge, Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, found the accused guilty of charges including murder, rioting, attempted murder, and insulting the national flag. Among the convicts, 26 were present during the court proceedings, while one, Munazir, attended via video conferencing. An arrest warrant was issued for Salim, who was absent during the trial.

Case Transferred from Kasganj to Lucknow

Following the sentencing, the convicts were taken into custody and sent to prison. Apart from charges under the Indian Penal Code, Bablu, Rahat, Mohsin, Naseem, Wasim, and Salim were convicted under the Arms Act for possessing weapons during the incident. The prosecution presented 18 witnesses, while the defense presented 23. After initial hearings in Kasganj, the case was transferred to Lucknow for further proceedings.

Justice After Six Years of Struggle

Chandan Gupta Murder Case: On January 26, 2018, during a Tiranga Yatra (Tricolor Rally) in Kasganj, violent clashes broke out between two groups. Amid the chaos, Chandan Gupta was shot dead by members of a specific community. The incident not only shook the nation but also escalated communal tensions, leaving Kasganj in turmoil for days. After six years of legal battles, justice has finally been served in this heart-wrenching case.
