Delhi Elections: The Congress party has fielded Alka Lamba against Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party candidate Atishi for the Delhi Assembly elections.
Alka Lamba has been given a ticket from Kalkaji assembly seat. Earlier, on the first day of 2025, Alka Lamba had visited Kalkaji temple, after which there was speculation on social media about her possible candidature from Kalkaji.
Now these speculations have been confirmed, as the Congress has officially nominated the National President of Mahila Congress to contest against the sitting MLA and Chief Minister Atishi from Kalkaji assembly seat.
Delhi Elections: Congress Has Fielded Strong Candidates Against AAP
Congress has so far announced the names of 48 candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections. In a strategic move, the party has decided to field prominent faces against prominent leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Former MP Sandeep Dikshit has been given a ticket from New Delhi Assembly seat to challenge former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Apart from this, Farhad Suri has been fielded from Jangpura seat against former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
Alka Lamba, who was an MLA from Chandni Chowk from 2015 to 2020, has not been given a ticket from her previous constituency this time. In her place, the Congress has fielded Mudit Agarwal, son of former MP JP Agarwal, on this seat.
Alka Lamba contested the 2020 elections from Chandni Chowk on a Congress ticket, but finished third.
Delhi Elections: Alka Lamba’s Political Story
Alka Lamba began her political journey as a student leader at Delhi University. In 2003, she contested the Moti Nagar assembly seat on a Congress ticket against BJP veteran and former chief minister Madan Lal Khurana. Though she lost to Khurana, her bold move to challenge a political heavyweight attracted widespread attention.
After over two decades with the Congress, Lamba resigned from the party on December 26, 2014, and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
In February 2015, she was elected to the Delhi Assembly from the Chandni Chowk constituency. However, citing disrespect within the party, Lamba quit the AAP in September 2019 and formally joined the Congress.
Following her defection, Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel disqualified her as an MLA on September 19, citing anti-defection laws.
