Earthquake in Myanmar: On Friday, a powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Myanmar, followed by a second tremor of 6.4 magnitude, causing massive destruction. So far 144 people have lost their lives and 732 others have been reported injured.
According to the head of Myanmar’s military government (junta), officials fear that the death toll may increase further. The earthquake caused many buildings, bridges and historical structures to collapse, leaving many people buried under the rubble.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 17.2 kilometers from Mandalay, a city with a population of about 1.5 million. Apart from Mandalay, the tremor was also felt in Sagaing, Naypyidaw and other areas.
