Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata are unwilling to end their strike despite appeals from the Supreme Court and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They are waiting for their demands to be met before considering ending their protest.
According to sources, under the Health Department’s direction, junior doctors will escalate their protest. The doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have set five conditions that must be met by the government.
What Are the Five Demands?
The five demands of the doctors include:
- Resignation of the Health Secretary, Director of Health Education, and Kolkata Police Chief.
- Installation of CCTV cameras in hospitals.
- Improvement in patient services.
- Establishment of patient services in every medical college in the state.
Court’s Directive
Recently, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, directed the doctors of RG Kar to end their protest against the rape and murder incident by 5 PM on Tuesday and resume their duties. Otherwise, the state government would be authorized to initiate disciplinary action against them.
Following the court’s order, the protesting junior doctors held meetings and decided to continue their protest. The decision to maintain the strike was made through an online poll, in which approximately 3,900 out of 4,000 participating doctors supported continuing the protest. Consequently, the decision was made to keep the demonstration ongoing.
