The government has appointed Dr. Poonam Gupta, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Poonam’s tenure will be 3 years.
She will replace Deputy Governor Michael Patra, who resigned in January. The Cabinet’s Appointment Committee has approved Poonam’s appointment. This appointment has been made before the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting on April 5.
Poonam is currently the Director of NCAER (National Council of Applied Economic Research) and a member of the 16th Finance Commission. Earlier, she has been a member of the Development Advisory Committee of NITI Aayog and the Executive Committee of FICCI.

Dr. Poonam Gupta: Sanjay Malhotra became the new governor on December 11
Earlier, on December 9, the government appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will be the 26th Governor of RBI and replaced the current Governor Shaktikanta Das. Das’ term was ending on 10 December 2024. Malhotra took over as governor from 11 December.
Dr. Poonam Gupta: Sanjay Malhotra is an expert in finance and taxation
Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre, has an engineering degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University, USA.
Malhotra has worked in various sectors including power, finance and taxation, information technology and mines. He has over 33 years of experience.
Before serving as Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance, he held the post of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Malhotra has expertise in finance and taxation at both the state and central government levels.
