Under Ben Stokes, England also won the three-match series versus The West Indies. Stokesy and co also whitewashed the visitors Windies by a margin of 3-0 before this ongoing series against Sri Lanka started. Sri Lanka will want to end their winless drought against England with a comprehensive performance in the last match of this tour.

The Lankans had come to the United Kingdom (UK) with great momentum. Sri Lanka had won the three-match series of the One Day International format versus India. The first fifty overs game of that series ended in a tied contest. But the hosts of that series, Sri Lanka won the next two matches and sealed an ODI series against India after 27 long years.

However, Sri Lanka has failed to keep up that momentum in this red ball series so far. They have given a fight in the matches played at Manchester and Lords. Still, the visitors haven’t found ways to stop England. Now to avoid a clean sweep, Sri Lanka needs to step in the last match of this red ball series.

Sri Lanka has faced England just once at the ground of Kennington Oval in London when they played a lone red ball match in 1998. The visitors, Sri Lanka ended up winning that Test match that time by a margin of 10 wickets under the leadership of Arjuna Ranatunga and the English side was led by Alec Stewart.

Sanath Jayasuriya had smashed 237 runs from just two innings, which was the highest runs in that lone match. He scored 213 runs in the first innings and was unbeaten on 24 runs in the second innings. With red cherry, Muttiah Muralitharan picked up 16 scalps in that only red ball match, which the most by the bowlers in that game.

Now Sri Lanka should take inspiration from this match and get the desired consolation victory to end the Test series with a win under their belt. The visitors can replace Prabath Jayasuriya with Jeffrey Vandersay for the next Test match. Jeffrey had a wonder say in the two ODI matches versus India. In one match, Vandersay had picked up 6 wickets for 33 runs at Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s top order has been a worry. They can also replace Pathum Nissanka with Kusal Mendis or Sadeera Samarawickrama. The top three batters haven’t contributed enough in this series. So it would be a good thought that the visitors add Mendis or Samarawickrama to their playing eleven for the final match of their tour of England in 2024.
