A shocking case has emerged from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where an imposter posing as a police officer has been accused of raping and cheating multiple women. The accused, Rajan Verma, an eighth-grade dropout, managed to deceive several female constables by promising marriage and exploiting their trust. The police have finally apprehended him after a prolonged period of evasion.
A Series of Deceptions
Rajan Verma, who hails from Lakhimpur Kheri district, had been on the run for a long time. His modus operandi involved gathering personal information about female police officers from the official police website. Using this data, he would initiate contact with them, pretending to be a high-ranking officer. Verma would then lure the women with promises of marriage, eventually establishing physical relationships with them under false pretences.
The Arrest and Charges
The police finally apprehended the accused after evading capture for over a year. A case was registered against him at the Kotwali police station on July 13, 2024, under charges of rape and fraud as per IPC Section 376. The police confirmed that Verma had not only exploited these women emotionally and physically but had also defrauded them of substantial sums of money.
How the Accused Was Caught
Verma’s arrest came after he attempted to secure a personal loan using the identity of one of his victims, a female constable. He claimed to be posted with the ADG in Lucknow and convinced her to co-sign a loan for a plot in the city. The police traced him through the documents in this fraudulent loan application, ultimately leading to his capture.
Accused’s Modus Operandi
According to the Police, Verma’s tactic involved accessing the police department’s website to extract detailed information about female officers, including their names and postings. Posing as a fellow officer, he would establish communication with them, eventually deceiving them into relationships. His deception was so convincing that he even staged a fake marriage with one of the victims.
