Green employment, as defined by the International Labor Organization, are jobs that help preserve natural resources, lessen waste, safeguard the environment, and develop more sustainable living and working practices.

With India aiming to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2070, the demand for green jobs is increasing in the country. The requirements for these jobs are highly demanded in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Importance Of Green Jobs

Green professions play a critical role in bringing about changes in our lifestyles and interactions with the environment.

According to the World Economic Forum, the global green transition is expected to create 30 million employment in the world by 2030 and 3.5 crore green jobs in India by 2047. It is expected that by the year 2050, the solar energy sector will provide approximately 30 lakh employment.

Sustainable Development Courses Are Being Conducted In Large Numbers

Given the demand for these, a large number of sustainability courses are being offered on online platforms.
For example, a growth of 200% was seen in the numbers of those taking the Sustainable Development course at Younsei University of South Korea between 2022-2023.

Skills Required for Green Jobs

As per UNIDO’s Green General Skill Index, four skill sets are most important for this.

Engineering and Technical Skills- This includes design, construction, and technology assessment of eco-building. This includes renewable energy design and research and development projects helpful in saving energy.

Science Skills -Since this is an area related to essential resources like water, electricity, and sewage services, understanding science subjects is important.

Operational management – These skills are also required for the organization to promote green activities, hence the demand for roles like sales engineers, climate change analysts, and transportation planners is also going to increase.

Monitoring Skills- This area also includes roles such as nuclear monitoring technicians. In such a situation, technical and legal knowledge is also necessary.
