Individuals in the BPL category rceive various benefits from the state government, including 5 kg of free grain (wheat/millet) per person. Additionally, each BPL cardholder is entitled to 2 liters of mustard oil for Rs 40 and 1 kg of sugar for Rs 13.5 per month.

Haryana Population: Over 70 Lakh People Added in BPL Category in Two Years

Apart from the rising BPL figures, what is even more shocking is that more than 70 lakh people have been added to this category in the last two years.

In December 2022, about 1.24 crore people (44 per cent of the total population) were listed in this category. But in the last two years, their number has increased by about 26 per cent and now this figure is 1.98 crore.

These figures raise questions on the Haryana government’s claim of accelerating development in the state.

State Government Has Announced A Probe

These figures are now raising questions. Minister Rajesh Nagar said a probe will be conducted. “The family identity card has been linked to CRID (Citizen Resource Information Department), which allows self-declaration, due to which 70 lakh additional people have been classified as BPL in the last two years, taking the figure to 70 per cent. Many people were facing problems, so the changes were made a few months ago to save them from frequent visits to the office. The department has no hand in this, people themselves have chosen to declare their income below Rs 1.8 lakh. We are in touch with the officials, and we will meet the chief minister to initiate a probe into the matter,” he said.

This District Has the Highest Number of BPL Beneficiaries

According to government data, Faridabad district has the highest number of BPL beneficiaries in the state, with 14.29 lakh people. It is followed by Hisar (13.55 lakh) and Mewat (13.49 lakh). Panchkula has the lowest BPL population, with 3.65 lakh beneficiaries.
