How to Become an IPS Officer: To become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, candidates must be strong both physically and mentally, as the journey involves rigorous training. A graduation degree is necessary to be eligible for this prestigious civil service exam.
UPSC Exam: The Gateway to IPS
Every year, numerous candidates apply for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam, but only a few are selected. Successful candidates often dream of becoming IAS, IFS, or IPS officers, with posts assigned based on their ranking. Here’s a brief overview of the process to become an IPS officer.
Exam and Training Process for IPS
The UPSC exam is one of the toughest exams in India, conducted in three stages: Preliminary Exam, Main Exam, and Interview. To become an IPS officer, passing the UPSC exam is mandatory. The UPSC Mains syllabus includes:
- 1 essay paper
- 2 language papers
- 4 General Studies (GS) papers
- 2 optional papers
These papers cover subjects like Modern Indian History, World Geography, International Relations, Indian Economic Development, Disaster Management, and Ethics, Aptitude, and Integrity.
Training at LBSNAA and SVPNPA
After passing the UPSC exam and being selected for IPS, candidates undergo a comprehensive training process:
- Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie: Initial training with a foundation course.
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad: A full year of training with both indoor and outdoor activities.

Daily Physical Training Routine
Trainee IPS officers start their day with 80 minutes of physical training, followed by 40 minutes of indoor classes. In the evening, they engage in 40-50 minutes of games.
First Posting and Salary
After completing their training, IPS officers receive their first posting as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). During the training period, trainee IPS officers receive a salary within the pay scale of 15,600-39,100, with a pay grade of 5400. Upon completion of training, they also receive various allowances and facilities such as a car, bugle, and guard.
