T20 World Cup: The Men in Blue have progressed to the next round of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and they will travel to West Indies to play those important fixtures.
India is in the Super Eight Round of this ICC mega event of the shortest format. Rohit Sharma and his men are in Group One, where they will face Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the mighty Aussies.
India is scheduled to play matches on 20th, 22nd and 24 of June 2024 in the Super Eight round. The Men in Blue will aim to continue their winning run and get into the top four of this year’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The Blues are undefeated in the tournament and also topped the group with 7 points. India won their matches versus Ireland, Pakistan and the United States of America.
In the T20 World Cup history, India has won only one title. That was under MS Dhoni in 2007 in South Africa. But since then, India has reached the finals just once in 2014. They lost to Sri Lanka in the finals when that event was held in Bangladesh. In 2016 and 2022, India reached the semi-finals and they are still searching for their second T20 World Cup trophy.
The two teams who had won the T20 World Cup earlier had an early exit from this year’s ICC T20 tournament. Pakistan was the champion of the 2009 edition while Sri Lanka won this event in 2014.
But in the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan and Sri Lanka didn’t qualify for the Super Eight Round, which was a surprise for many cricketing fans.
Some fans were also waiting to witness another India Vs Pakistan clash in this edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024 because the two arch-rivalling nations were in the same group during the league stages.
New Zealand was the other side which didn’t qualify for the next round. The Kiwis never won the T20 World Cup. In the 2021 edition, they reached the finals. But Australia won that edition.
4 Times The Men In Blue Had An Early Exit From The T20 World Cup –
T20 World Cup: 1. 2009 –
India went in this edition of the T20 World Cup as the defending champions after they won the title in 2007. The 2009 edition was held in England and Pakistan won that edition of the shortest format.
But for MS Dhoni and his men, this edition was a disaster as India couldn’t defend the title after they lost to West Indies, Hosts England and South Africa. Yuvraj Singh was the highest run-getter while Pragyan Ojha picked up the most wickets in that edition.
T20 World Cup: 2. 2010 –
India continued to perform badly in the 2010 edition of this tournament of the shortest format. The 2010 edition was hosted in the Caribbean. India had a good start to this edition as they won the two matches which were played versus Afghanistan and South Africa.
Suresh Raina is the only India to smash a century in T20 World Cup history in the game against the Proteas which the Men in Blue won.
But India lost the last three matches of that edition. Those matches were played against Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka. Suresh was also the highest run-getter for India in that edition and Ashish Nehra picked up the most wickets in the 2010 T20 World Cup.
T20 World Cup: 3. 2012 –
The 2012 T20 World Cup edition was hosted in the islands of Sri Lanka and India didn’t have a bad tournament. But still, they had an early exit despite just one loss against Australia.
India had won the games which were played against Afghanistan, England and Pakistan.
MS Dhoni and Co needed to restrict South Africa for 121 runs, which they failed to do so. India won that match by just a run and failed to qualify for the next round.
Virat Kohli was the highest run-getter for India in that season while Lakshmipathy Balaji was the highest wicket-taker for India in that 2012 edition.
T20 World Cup: 4. 2021 –
Due to the coronavirus, the T20 World Cup wasn’t held in 2020 and India had those hosting rights. After 2016, the next edition was played in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Australia won that edition. But India lost to New Zealand and Pakistan also won their first-ever match in the ICC event against India.
These two losses didn’t allow Virat Kohli and his men to qualify for the next round and they had an early exit from this T20I event.
Kannur Lokesh Rahul was the top run-getter in that edition and Jasprit Boom Boom Bumrah had the most scalps to his name in another disappointing edition of the T20 World Cup for the Men in Blue.
