Made in India Web Browser: India may soon get its own web browser. The responsibility of making it has been given to Indian software company Zoho Corporation. The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announced this on Thursday (March 20).
The ministry had organized a competition named ‘Indian Web Browser Development Challenge’ with the aim of developing an indigenous web browser, in which Zoho Corporation has won the first prize. For this, Zoho has received a prize of Rs 1 crore.
At the same time, Team Ping came second and Team Ajna came third in the competition. Team Ping will get Rs 75 lakh and Team Ajna will get Rs 50 lakh. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave a cheque of prize money to all the winners. During this, he said that it was a pleasure to see that the winners in this challenge are coming from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
What will be the specialty of the made in India browser
Data Security: This browser will be under the supervision of the government and the country’s data will remain in the country.
Data Privacy: Made in India browser will follow the Data Privacy Act. Users’ data will be safe.
Will run on all devices: This browser will run on all operating systems like iOS, Windows and Android.
American companies dominate internet browsing
American companies dominate internet browsing used all over the world. Google Chrome is used the most among these. Google has around 850 million users (85 crores) in India, which is about 89% of the total users.
Funding of Rs 3 crore to make web browser
The government has announced funding of Rs 3 crore to make Made in India web browser. After it is ready, it will be given a security certificate, after which users will be able to use the indigenous browser.
Why is there a need for indigenous internet browser
Internet browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla, Firefox do not include Indian certification agencies in their root store. The root store is called the trust store, which provides information about the operating system and application whether it is secure or not. No Indian agency is involved in its certification.
Currently, the browsers present in India do not have any coordination with the Government of India regarding security and privacy, due to which India is going to develop its own internet browser. India is rapidly digitizing. In such a situation, online security and privacy is an important issue.

Zoho Corporation is an Indian technology company that makes internet based software and tools. It is headquartered in Chennai and it makes easy and cheap software solutions for companies.
