Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, died on Sunday at the age of 100. He was President from 1977 to 1981. According to reports, he was ill for a long time.

Born on 1 October 1924, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He became President in 1977 after defeating Gerald Ford and during his tenure he laid the foundation of US relations with the Middle East.

During his tenure and after leaving the presidency, Carter built his legacy through tireless efforts for peace and humanitarian causes. In 1978, he brokered the historic Camp David Accords, which laid the framework for peace in the Middle East and led to a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt.

This is why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing international peace, democracy, and human rights.

Jimmy Carter’s Son Confirms His Death

Carter’s son confirmed his death but did not immediately disclose the cause. In a statement in February 2023, the Carter Center announced that the former president was being treated for an aggressive form of skin cancer, melanoma, which had spread to his liver and brain. Carter’s last photo was taken with family and friends outside his home on October 1, his 100th birthday.

First President from the Deep South Since 1837

Carter’s presidency saw several significant upheavals, including the energy crisis and the Iran hostage crisis. He served as governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

Carter was the first president to come from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democratic president elected between the presidencies of Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton.

Wife Passed Away Last Year

James Earl Carter Jr. was born in Plains on October 1, 1924. His father was a farmer, and he had a great love for books and his Baptist religion. He studied nuclear science at the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with distinction in 1946. That same year, he married Rosalynn Smith. His wife died on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96.
