Early Life and Background

Kapil Sharma was born on 2 April 1981 in Amritsar, Punjab, into a middle-class Punjabi Brahmin family.

His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, was a head constable in the Punjab Police and Kapil’s most enthusiastic supporter.

His mother, Janak Rani, was a homemaker with a natural singing voice and young Kapil would quietly absorb that love for performance watching her sing at neighbourhood ladies’ sangeets.

He attended Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Hindu College, Amritsar, followed by training in theatre at Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar.

Back then, he played serious roles on stage comedy was not even on the horizon yet.
In 1997, his father was diagnosed with cancer.

For seven years, the family watched him fight. He passed away in 2004, leaving Kapil with financial responsibilities no young man should have to carry.

To support his family and fund his studies, he worked at a PCO booth, took shifts at a textile mill, taught theatre to younger students, and sang as a background artist at hotel events in Delhi.

These were not glamorous years but they built the person he would become.

Breakthrough: Comedy Circus and Reality Shows

Kapil first appeared on television in 2005 on the Punjabi comedy show Hasde Hasaande Ravo.

Then came the pivotal moment he auditioned for The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (Season 3) in Amritsar and was rejected. He did not go home.

Kapil Sharma Biography: He travelled to Delhi, auditioned again, made it through, and went on to win the entire season in 2007.

He used his entire ₹10 lakh prize money to fund his sister’s wedding.

What followed was an extraordinary six-season run on Sony TV’s Comedy Circus between 2008 and 2013 five of them consecutive wins.

Judges and audiences were stunned by his timing, his relatable middle-class humour, and his ability to keep reinventing himself.

He was not just winning a reality show. He was becoming a household name.

Rise to Fame: Television Shows

Kapil Sharma Biography: By 2013, Kapil had the fame but not the creative control. So he took a risk he founded K9 Productions and launched Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV.

The show blended sitcom warmth with Bollywood celebrity conversation and became a national phenomenon almost instantly.

Every major film star came to his set: Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, Aamir Khan.

In 2013, he was named CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in Entertainment, beating some of Bollywood’s biggest names.

After a channel dispute in 2016, he moved to Sony TV with The Kapil Sharma Show, which ran for five successful seasons until 2023.

Then, in 2024, came his most ambitious move yet he took his show to Netflix as The Great Indian Kapil Show, reuniting with longtime collaborator Sunil Grover.

The show trended in over 30 countries and was renewed multiple times, with Season 5 confirmed following the conclusion of Season 4 in early 2026.

Film Career and Other Ventures

Kapil’s Bollywood debut in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015) was a commercial success.

His second film, Firangi (2017), which he also produced, disappointed at the box office.

His most significant cinematic moment came with Zwigato (2023), directed by Nandita Das, where he played a food delivery rider navigating the gig economy.

Critics who had only seen him tell jokes were genuinely moved by the quiet depth of his performance.

A sequel to his debut, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, was released in December 2025.

Beyond screens, Kapil has built a business empire. K9 Films continues to produce content, and he has launched Kap’s Cafe outlets in Canada and Dubai proof that the Amritsar boy who worked at a phone booth now runs hospitality ventures across two continents.

The Fall, The Controversy, and The Comeback

Kapil Sharma Biography: At the peak of his powers in 2017, Kapil Sharma’s world came apart and much of it happened in full public view.

On a flight back from Melbourne, a heavily intoxicated Kapil reportedly got into a bitter argument with his closest collaborator, Sunil Grover, that turned physical.

Sunil, along with several other cast members, quit the show the very next day.

What followed was a slow-motion unravelling: cancelled shoots, Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn left waiting for hours on set, a now-infamous drunk tweet directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and an abusive late-night phone call to a journalist that made national headlines. Ratings plummeted.

Sponsors walked. And behind the chaos, Kapil later admitted, was a man quietly drowning battling clinical depression, severe alcohol addiction, and thoughts he was not ready to speak about publicly.

The comeback was neither quick nor easy. He checked into an Ayurvedic detox centre in Karnataka and later a rehabilitation clinic in Bengaluru.

He went off the radar, lost weight, and rebuilt himself quietly.

In December 2018, he married his longtime love Ginni Chatrath and by his own account, that changed everything.

With Salman Khan stepping in as a producer, The Kapil Sharma Show returned to Sony TV later that year.

The audience came back immediately, as if they had been waiting at the door.

His serious role in Zwigato (2023) silenced the last of the doubters.

And when he finally reunited with Sunil Grover on Netflix in 2024 the same man at the centre of his most painful chapter it felt less like a television moment and more like a redemption arc finally closing.
