The Origins of the Kumbh Mela
While there are numerous references to the Kumbh Mela in Vedic texts and scriptures, it is widely believed that King Harshvardhan is credited with starting the Kumbh Mela. Historians suggest that he began organizing the event at the age of 16. Moreover, every time the Kumbh Mela was held, Harshvardhan would donate all his possessions. His donations continued until everything he had was exhausted.
Who Was King Harshvardhan?
Harshvardhan (590–647) was a valiant emperor in ancient India. He established a strong empire in northern India, ruling over almost the entire region, except for Punjab. It is said that he made Kannauj his capital and succeeded in unifying North India under one rule. He is often regarded as the last emperor of India to achieve such a feat.
How Harshvardhan Made His Donations
King Harshvardhan is said to have been a generous donor throughout his life, especially in Prayagraj. Before giving his donations, he would always meditate on Lord Sun, Shiva, and Buddha. After performing his prayers, he would donate to monks, scholars, Brahmins, the needy, and Buddhists. His generosity was such that he would even donate his royal attire. His donations were made in four categories: royal family, army/administration, priests, and the poor.
