The Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthana)
Everyone knows that the gods and demons churned the ocean together. During this churning, many invaluable things came out of the ocean. One of these was the Amrit Kalash. There was a fierce war between the gods and demons over the Amrit Kalash.
The demons defeated the gods and captured the Amrit Kalash. In response, the gods sent Indra’s son Jayanta to extract the nectar. Jayanta took the form of a bird and deceitfully snatched the Amrit Kalash from the demons.
The Gods Who Accompanied Jayanta
When Jayanta went to retrieve the pot of nectar from the demons, the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn also accompanied him. Each deity was given a specific responsibility.
- The Sun’s task was to protect the pot of nectar from breaking.
- The Moon was entrusted with ensuring that the nectar did not spill by mistake.
- The teacher of the gods, Jupiter, was sent to stop the demons.
- Saturn was assigned the responsibility of keeping an eye on Jayanta, ensuring that he didn’t drink all the nectar himself.
Mahakumbh 2025: The Mistake of the Moon
According to beliefs, when the gods were taking the Amrit Kalash to heaven, the Moon made a mistake. It was the responsibility of the Moon to drop the Amrit Kalash, but due to a small mistake, four drops of Amrit fell from the Amrit Kalash.
These four drops fell at four places on earth: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. The places where these drops fell became holy and bathing there was considered very auspicious.
The responsibility of bringing the Amrit Kalash was entrusted to the Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. This is why the position of these planets is considered important in the organization of the Kumbh Mela.
It is believed that bathing in the Kumbh washes away the sins accumulated over many births and is also considered a path to spiritual advancement.
