Mahakumbh: Amrit Snan to Last All Day
Sadhus and saints of various akhadas are taking Amrit Snan and this program will continue till evening. Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhada are among the first ones to take Amrit Snan on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
It is noteworthy that during Amrit Snan, sadhus of 13 Akharas take a dip in the Triveni Sangam. After this, common people are allowed to take a bath. Amrit Snan is considered the main attraction of the Mahakumbh Mela. First of all, Naga sadhus are given a chance to take a bath. Let us know why this tradition is performed.
According to religious beliefs, during the Samudra Manthan when the gods and demons were fighting to protect the Amrit Kalash, four drops of Amrit fell on four places Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nashik. This incident marked the beginning of the Mahakumbh Mela at these places.
Naga Sadhus are considered devotees of Lord Shiva and are believed to have the right to bathe first. This tradition has been going on since then, the first right to bathe in Amrit is given to Naga Sadhus. The bath of Naga Sadhus is seen as the center of religious and spiritual energy.

Mahakumbh: Things to Keep in Mind on Amrit Snan Day
- The first bath on the day of Amrit Snan is reserved for Naga sadhus. After them, other prominent saints and sadhus take the holy dip.
- You should take bath only after the Naga sadhus and saints have taken bath, otherwise you will not be able to get the spiritual benefit of the Kumbh bath.
If you are going to take a dip in the Mahakumbh on the day of Amrit Snan, then take care of cleanliness. Do not use soap or shampoo while bathing in the Ganga.
After taking bath in Mahakumbh, do visit the temple of Lord Hanuman and Akshaya Vata tree located near Sangam.
