The candidate was identified as Balasaheb Shinde, who was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Voting was held on all 288 seats to elect a new government in Maharashtra. Counting of votes is scheduled to take place on November 23.

Could Voting Be Postponed?

Balasaheb Shinde collapsed on the ground at the Chhatrapati Shahu Vidyalaya polling booth in Beed. He was first rushed to Kaku Nana Hospital in Beed. Later, he was shifted to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police have confirmed that the body has been sent for post-mortem.

According to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if a candidate dies during the election process, polling for the respective seat can be postponed under Section 52.

Maharashtra’s Beed Seat

The Beed assembly seat, which was once a stronghold of Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is now with the Ajit Pawar faction. This faction is in alliance with the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The main contest in Maharashtra is between the Mahayuti alliance (led by the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance (which includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction).
