Maldives foreign minister Moosa Zameer thanked India for its gesture to renew the quota, allowing the export of certain quantities of essential commodities for the nation on Saturday.
The Indian High Commissioner announced on social media platform X about this move through a post. Under this agreement, India has removed export restrictions on items such as onions, potatoes, rice, eggs, etc.
The quantities of essentials have been approved under the unique bilateral mechanism between the two countries. Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) is India’s policy or doctrine of maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
Amid the India-Maldives dispute, India has agreed to export specific quantities of essential commodities for 2024-25 period, as requested by the Maldivian government.
Decisions made by the government under the “Neighbors First” approach
The ‘Neighbors First’ policy, which gives precedence to India’s neighboring countries, is the reason behind these actions, according to the Indian High Commission.
India has long supported Maldivian development that is centered on people. Additionally, India continued to provide the Maldives with rice, sugar, and onions last year despite the export prohibition.
This announcement from the Indian government comes at a time when the past few months have seen difficult relations with the Maldives.
After taking office as president, Muhammad Muizzu implemented the India Out policy in the neighboring nation. It was decided to evacuate the 88 Indian soldiers who were present under this.
