Delhi Airport: New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. Due to this, passengers often have to wait in long queues for security checks.
To reduce these queues, full-body scanners will now be installed at Delhi airport. This technology is already being used at airports in the US and Canada.
Delhi Airport: Over 1,200 Security Checks Per Hour
These advanced full-body scanners have the capability to complete the security check in just 3 seconds and can scan more than 1,200 people per hour. The process has been started under the guidelines of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Four body scanners have been installed at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 and their trial run will begin soon.
Trials to Begin in May
Trials of full-body scanners at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport will begin in May, with two each being installed at Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3). “The IT interface for these machines is being finalised. After a trial period of three to four months, a committee led by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) will evaluate the findings and establish a standard operating procedure (SOP) for full-scale implementation,” an airport official said.
These Machines Already in Use at Foreign Airports
This technology is already being used at major international airports in the US, Canada and Australia. An official said each scan takes only three seconds, making it possible to conduct security checks of 1,200 passengers per hour. The focus is on increasing security while minimising inconvenience to passengers.
