In Barbados, Australia clinched their fourth title in the fifty-over event. Before 2007, the Aussies had won the ODI World Cup thrice in 1987, 1999 and 2003. Australia won the hat-trick of ODI World Cup trophies on this day in 2007. In 1999, Australia won the cup under the captaincy of Steve Waugh. However, under the leadership of Ricky Pointing, they made sure to carry the rich legacy of Waugh in the World Cup tournaments of 2003 and 2007 to complete their hat-trick of wins in this fifty-over event.
In the 2007 World Cup of the ODI format, the Aussies had an amazing run in that tournament. This fifty-over event was hosted in the Caribbean. Australia played 11 games in that ICC event and ended up winning all of them. They even defeated teams like South Africa and Sri Lanka twice in that tournament.
The final was mostly affected because of the rains. But the Aussies still made a match out of it. They batted first and because of a century from their explosive wicketkeeper batter and opener, Adam Gilchrist, Australia scored 281 runs in reduced 38 overs. However, when the Lankans batted, two overs more were cut because of bad light.
Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumara Sangakkara scored vital half-centuries in the big final at Kensington Oval at Brigetown in Barbados. But the other batters from the island nation couldn’t do much in the game as the Aussies went from strength to strength and took the match away from them completely.
In 36 overs, Sri Lanka managed to score just 215 runs for the loss of eight wickets, which meant the Aussies won the big finale of the 2007 ODI World Cup by 53 runs. Adam Gilchrist was awarded the Player of the Match award for his top score of 149 runs with the willow in hand.
