Politics: Bill to be Passed During NDA’s Current Term

During the press conference, Amit Shah confirmed that the NDA government, under the leadership of BJP, would implement the One Nation, One Election bill during its current term. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, was also present at the event.

PM Modi’s Stand on One Nation, One Election

Politics: On the occasion of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his support for the One Nation, One Election initiative. In his speech from the Red Fort, Modi emphasized that the frequent elections are hindering the nation’s progress. He called upon the country to move forward with this idea, which is one of the key promises made in BJP’s election manifesto.

High-Level Committee Recommendations

A high-level committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, had recommended holding simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. In March this year, the committee proposed that local body elections be conducted within 100 days after the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. Furthermore, it is likely that the Law Commission may suggest conducting synchronized elections across all three levels of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—starting in 2029.
