PARIS Olympic 2024:The opening ceremony of the Olympics is scheduled for 26th July. However, India’s Olympic journey will begin on 25th July itself, when Indian athletes will participate for the first time. Six archers will enter the archery event for the ranking rounds.
The Paris Olympics marks the 33rd edition of the Olympic Games, with 10,672 athletes from 206 countries participating. India has a long history in the Olympics.
Olympic History of India:
The first modern Olympic took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece, but India did not participate. India’s Olympic journey started with the Paris Games in 1900, where Norman Pritchard, born in Calcutta in British India, participated. Pritchard competed in the 200-meter hurdle race in the 1900 Olympics, marking India’s debut. India won its first Olympic medal through Pritchard. The first gold medal was secured in the Amsterdam Olympics of 1928 by the Indian hockey team, led by Dhyan Chand. Subsequently, India won gold medals in 1932 and 1936 as well.
India’s Medal Tally:
From the Paris Olympics in 1900 to the Tokyo Olympic in 2020, India has participated in 25 Summer Olympics. A total of 1,218 Indian athletes have represented the country so far. In the most recent Tokyo Olympics held in 2020, India achieved a total of 35 medals, including 10 gold, 9 silver, and 16 bronze medals. The Tokyo Olympics of 2020 saw India’s best performance with 7 medals. Indian hockey has contributed the most to this success, winning 12 medals overall for India.
