Pollution in Delhi: GRAP-3 Restrictions Reimposed to Combat Rising Air Quality Issues

Pollution in Delhi: GRAP Stage 3 (GRAP-3) has been re-implemented on Thursday (January 9) after the deterioration in air quality (AQI) in Delhi-NCR. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued a notification in this regard.

According to the information given by the Commission, if the AQI in Delhi-NCR exceeds 350, then GRAP-3 will be implemented as a precaution. If the air quality exceeds 400 on the same day, then GRAP-4 restrictions will be implemented again.

Pollution in Delhi: AQI Climbs to 357

The notification said that the AQI was recorded as 297 on January 8, 2025. Due to calm winds and foggy conditions, the AQI increased rapidly and reached 357 by 4:00 pm on January 9, 2025.

Pollution in Delhi: GRAP-3 Restrictions Imposed Once More

It is noteworthy that GRAP-3 restrictions were imposed on January 3 this year, but were lifted on January 5 after pollution levels decreased. However, on Thursday, when the Air Quality Index (AQI) once again crossed the “very poor” category with levels above 300, GRAP-3 restrictions were re-imposed.

Pollution in Delhi: What are the Restrictions Under GRAP-3?

  1. Restriction on Goods Transport: BS-4 diesel engine Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) will be banned in Delhi for goods transportation, except for emergency and essential services.
  2. Ban on Entry of BS-4 or Lower Vehicles: Vehicles registered outside Delhi with BS-4 or lower standards will be prohibited from entering Delhi. This was previously a part of GRAP-4 but is now implemented in GRAP-3 as well.
  3. Ban on Non-Essential Diesel MGVs: Non-essential diesel MGVs with BS-4 or older standards will be banned in Delhi.
  4. Hybrid Mode for Schools: Schools in Delhi-NCR may conduct hybrid mode classes for up to the 5th grade, allowing parents to choose between online or offline classes.
  5. Change in Office Timings: State governments in Delhi and NCR may modify government office timings under GRAP-3.
