“Now It’s Our Turn” – Russia Prepares for Putin’s India Trip

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday announced that President Vladimir Putin has accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India and preparations for the visit are underway.

Speaking at a conference organised by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) on “Russia and India: Towards a New Bilateral Agenda”, Lavrov said, “Preparations are currently underway for Putin’s visit to India.”

Quoting Russia’s state news agency TASS, Lavrov confirmed, “President Vladimir Putin has accepted the Indian government’s invitation for a visit to Delhi.”

Preparations have begun for the Russian head of state’s visit to India. Lavrov said, “Prime Minister Modi chose Russia for his first foreign visit after being elected for the third time, and now it’s our turn.” However, the dates of the visit have not been disclosed yet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia in July 2024, marking his first visit to the country in nearly five years after being elected for the third time. Before this, he had traveled to the far-eastern city of Vladivostok in 2019 to attend an economic summit.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the Ukraine war, along with the geopolitical turmoil following Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency.

India has maintained a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict, despite Prime Minister Modi repeatedly telling Putin that “this is not the era of war.” India has abstained from UN resolutions condemning Russia and has also refrained from publicly criticising Putin.

India has maintained strong ties with Russia while also keeping its relations with Ukraine intact. In 2024, PM Modi visited both Russia and Ukraine, meeting with President Zelenskyy. In October, he also traveled to Kazan, Russia, for the BRICS Summit.
