The annual Neja Mela held in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has been banned this year. The police administration has made it clear that no event will be held in the name of the invader Syed Salar Masud Ghazi. ASP Shrish Chandra stated that if a harmful tradition has been followed for years, it needs to be changed.
Who Was Salar Masud Ghazi?
Syed Salar Masud Ghazi is known in history as a brutal invader. He was the nephew and general of Mahmud of Ghazni, who led several invasions of India. His primary objective was to plunder wealth and establish Islamic rule.
Attack on Somnath Temple & Massacre of Hindus
As a commander under Mahmud of Ghazni, Salar Masud Ghazi played a key role in the infamous plunder of the Somnath Temple. He was responsible for the destruction of Hindu temples and the massacre of thousands of Hindus in North India.
Killed by King Suheldev
Salar Masud Ghazi was ultimately defeated and killed by King Suheldev of Shravasti in a historic battle. This battle is seen as a symbol of Indian resistance against invaders.
Strict Action by Sambhal Administration
Every year, the Neja Mela was organized in Sambhal in Salar Masud Ghazi’s name. However, this time, the administration has taken a strict stance. ASP Shrish Chandra stated that no event would be allowed in memory of a brutal invader.
He further added, “Just because a tradition has been followed for years doesn’t mean it is right. It needs to be changed.” Hindu organizations have welcomed this decision, considering it a step towards correcting historical narratives.
