Born Into Stardom But Nothing Was Handed to Her

Shraddha Kapoor was born on 3 March 1987 in Mumbai to one of Bollywood’s most recognisable families.

Her father, Shakti Kapoor, is an iconic character actor known for legendary roles across hundreds of films. Her mother, Shivangi Kolhapure, is a celebrated actress and singer from the 1980s and the sister of veteran actress Padmini Kolhapure.

Her maternal lineage is also distantly connected to music royalty the Mangeshkar family, including Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

Growing up in Mumbai’s film world opened doors, but it also meant constant scrutiny. Shraddha attended Jamnabai Narsee School, completed her senior schooling at the American School of Bombay, and then enrolled in Boston University to study Theatre.

After just one year, she dropped out to chase her dream of acting a gamble that took years to pay off, but ultimately paid off in full.

Shraddha Kapoor’s Career: Setbacks, Survival, and Superstardom

Shraddha made her Bollywood debut in Teen Patti (2010) alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley.

Despite a small role, she earned a Filmfare Best Debut nomination. Her first leading role in Luv Ka The End (2011) underperformed commercially.

She signed a multi-film deal with Yash Raj Films and later walked away from it a bold, risky move that defined her career.

The gamble paid off in 2013. Aashiqui 2, a musical romance directed by Mohit Suri, cast her as Arohi a vulnerable, raw singer whose journey breaks your heart.

The film became a blockbuster phenomenon. Shraddha’s performance earned her a Filmfare Best Actress nomination and made her a household name overnight.

A string of hits followed the Haider (2014), Ek Villain (2014) where she also lent her voice to the song ‘Galliyan’, and the dance blockbuster ABCD 2 (2015). Then came a slump.

Several films between 2016 and 2018 failed to connect. Critics wrote her off but She refused to quit.

In 2018, Stree turned everything around. The horror-comedy became a cult classic and launched one of Bollywood’s most beloved franchises.

Chhichhore (2019), in which she also starred, won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film.

Her 2024 return in Stree 2 crushed every expectation ₹875 crore worldwide, the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year.
