The Impact of Marijuana on the Body: Duration and Harmful Effects

Must read

The Impact of Marijuana on the Body: A recent report published in the Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Review has shed light on the effects of regular marijuana consumption on the human body. According to the findings, habitual marijuana smokers may develop a tolerance to the drug over time. The extent of marijuana’s impact on different parts of the body varies based on several factors, including the potency of the marijuana and the frequency of use.

Tolerance and Duration of Effects

Psychopharmacologist Lane MacKregor of Sydney has revealed that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive chemical in marijuana, can remain in the body for weeks after use. However, the feelings of fatigue or physical breakdown caused by marijuana typically last for a shorter duration. The effects of marijuana differ from person to person, impacting various parts of the body.

Impact Duration on Different Body Parts

  • Hair: The effect of marijuana can be detected in hair for up to 90 days.
  • Urine: THC can be present in urine for up to 30 days.
  • Saliva: The effect lasts for about 24 hours in saliva.

The duration of these effects is largely dependent on the frequency and amount of marijuana intake.

THC’s Path in the Body

The chemical THC from marijuana travels to various tissues and organs, including the heart, liver, brain, and fat cells. The liver metabolizes THC into 11-hydroxy-THC and carboxy-THC, with about 85% of these metabolites being eliminated from the body, while the rest linger within.

Effects of Marijuana on the Body

Marijuana contains two primary chemicals, THC and CBD, which have different effects:

  • THC: Increases intoxication and can lead to a loss of control over brain neurons when present in high amounts.
  • CBD: Helps reduce the pain associated with intoxication but can also cause a person to feel physically drained.

When the THC content in marijuana exceeds the CBD levels, smoking marijuana can cause the THC to reach the brain quickly, leading to adverse effects.

Health Risks of Marijuana

  • Mental Health: Excessive marijuana consumption can lead to bipolar disorder, mental health issues, and depression.
  • Cancer Risk: While more research is needed, there is evidence suggesting that marijuana smokers have a higher risk of developing cancer.
  • Respiratory Problems: Chronic marijuana smoking can lead to a persistent cough, impair lung function, and increase the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.
