Uttarakhand: Muslim Organizations Protest Against Action on Illegal Madrasas, Demand Their Reopening

On Friday, March 7, Muslim organizations staged a protest against the district administration’s action on illegally operated madrasas in the Pachhwadoon region of Dehradun.

Hundreds of people gathered under the banner of Muslim Seva Sangathan and gheraoed the tehsil office. They protested against the administration and handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to the tehsil officials.

The protesters alleged that the administration took action against madrasas and mosques in violation of regulations and demanded an immediate halt to such actions. They also demanded the reopening of the sealed madrasas.

Muslim Groups Threaten Stronger Protests

The protesters handed over a memorandum to the tehsil administration demanding immediate halt to the action against madrasas and opening of the sealed madrasas. Accusing the administration of bias, they said that targeting institutions imparting religious education is unfair.

The officials of the Muslim Seva Sangathan warned that if their demands are not considered, they will intensify their agitation. The protesters also made it clear that if the administration does not take any action soon, they will not back down from intensifying their protest.

Action Was Taken Against Illegally Operated Madrasas: Administration

Regarding the whole matter, the administration said that action is being taken against illegally running madrasas. According to the officials, madrasas running without registration and without following the rules have been closed. They clarified that this action has not been taken against any particular religion but against illegally running institutions.

The administration said that no action has been taken against any recognized or legally run madrassa. The madrassas that have been closed were running without proper authorization. The administration further said that if any institution has any objection, it can file a complaint under the legal process.

What is the Whole Matter?

The Uttarakhand government, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, is taking strict action against illegal madrasas. As part of this action, the government has sealed five illegal madrasas in Pachwadoon citing lack of facilities and permit violations. Apart from this, a mosque built in violation of rules in Dhakrani has also been sealed. In response, Muslim organizations staged a protest against the district administration’s actions.
